Brandgefahr bei CNC-FräsenFire hazards with CNC routers

SPÄNE, STAUB, REIBUNG UND ABSAUGUNG ALS RISIKOKETTE · DE / ENCHIPS, DUST, FRICTION AND EXTRACTION AS A RISK CHAIN · DE / EN

CNC routers create fire risks not like an open flame but through friction, wrong cutting data, hot chips and combustible dusts. Wood, MDF, plastics and extraction systems are particularly critical.

KERNAUSSAGEN
KEY POINTS
  • Too high a spindle speed with too little feed produces heat instead of chips.
  • Fine wood and plastic dust burns faster than compact material.
  • Extraction systems collect fire load and must be cleaned and suitably built.
KategorieAussageEinordnung
BewertungRichtige Schnittdaten reduzieren Brandrisiko.
CategoryStatementAssessment
FactWood dust is a fire and explosion hazard.OSHA and HSE point this out explicitly.
AssessmentCorrect cutting data reduce the fire risk.Good chip formation prevents frictional heat.
LimitExtraction alone is not enough. It must be suitable, cleaned and considered in fire-protection terms.

MechanismusMechanism

Routing removes material by cutting. If the tool rubs instead of cutting, the temperature at the tool and in the material rises. Dull cutters, wrong cutting values, poor chip evacuation and overly long run times can thus favour incipient fires.

Staub als BrandstoffDust as fuel

OSHA describes woodworking as prone to fire and explosion because large quantities of wood, sawdust, paints, solvents and ignition sources come together. Fine wood dust in particular can accumulate in unexpected places [1]. HSE likewise points out that wood dust can cause fire and explosion and that many fires start in the extraction system [2].

For CNC this means: the workpiece is not the only fire load. Dust in the machine bay, in guides, on power supplies, in hoses, filters and chip containers can become the real problem.

The most important protective measures are technical process control: sharp tools, suitable cutting data, sufficient feed, secure workpiece clamping, effective chip evacuation and no unattended long jobs with combustible materials. Extraction systems need suitable filters, earthing or static protection depending on the system, cleaning and safe disposal of hot chips.

FazitConclusion

CNC fire hazard is not a side issue. It arises from process errors and dust management. A good routing strategy is therefore a quality measure and a safety measure at the same time.
