Filament und BrandverhaltenFilament and fire behaviour

PLA, PETG, ABS UND TECHNISCHE KUNSTSTOFFE OHNE FALSCHE PAUSCHALEN · DE / ENPLA, PETG, ABS AND ENGINEERING PLASTICS WITHOUT FALSE GENERALISATIONS · DE / EN

3D printing filaments are thermoplastics and can be fire load in a fire. A simple ranking such as 'PLA burns, PETG does not' is technically wrong; formulation, additives, geometry, temperature and the fire source decide.

KERNAUSSAGEN
KEY POINTS
  • Filaments differ in combustibility depending on polymer, additives and part geometry.
  • Printing temperature is not ignition temperature.
  • ABS and ASA can be more critical for emissions than PLA; fire protection and air quality are separate questions.
  • Flame-retardant special filaments must be specifically certified, not just advertised.

PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PA, PC and TPU are thermoplastic polymers. They melt or soften at different temperatures, decompose under higher thermal stress and can burn depending on oxygen, geometry and ignition source.

The printing temperature says little about fire behaviour. A PLA part will react differently under room-fire conditions than a filament strand at the hotend. What matters is ignition, flame spread, dripping, smoke, additives and whether the part forms embers or melt.

Prusa gives typical printing temperatures of around 185 to 235 degrees Celsius for PLA, higher for PETG and higher again for ABS/ASA, plus enclosure recommendations for some materials [1]. These values are process data, not a fire-protection classification.

NIOSH and university guides stress emissions from heated plastics, VOCs, UFPs and material dependence in 3D printing [2] [3]. ABS/ASA are often more critical for air quality because of styrene and odour; that does not automatically produce a simple fire ranking.

Filament spools are stored goods and fire load. They should not lie next to fan heaters, power supplies or in the laser area. Inside the printer enclosure only the materials needed for the job should be present. For technical applications where fire behaviour matters, marketing terms such as 'flame retardant' are not enough; test reports such as a UL 94 classification or application-specific standards are decisive.

FazitConclusion

Filament is rarely the primary fire cause. It can, however, be the fire load that turns a small electrical fault into a larger fire. The correct judgement is therefore: choose material deliberately, limit stored quantities and check manufacturer data.
