KabeltrommelnCable reels

WARUM AUFGEWICKELTE LEITUNGEN HEISS WERDEN KÖNNEN · DE / ENWHY COILED CABLES CAN GET HOT · DE / EN

Cable reels and extension leads are common makeshifts in workshops. Under high load, when coiled, damaged or overloaded, they can overheat and start fires.

KERNAUSSAGEN
KEY POINTS
  • Every cable produces heat loss proportional to current squared times resistance.
  • Coiled cables dissipate heat less well.
  • Cable reels must be unwound and loaded according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Extension leads are not a permanent installation.

Physik der ErwärmungThe physics of heating

Cables have electrical resistance. When current flows, power is lost as heat. The higher the current, the more strongly the heat rises. If the cable is operated coiled, the heat is dissipated less well; insulation and reel can heat up.

Electrical Safety First points out that cable reels must be unwound for their rated current and should have a thermal cut-out [1]. The London Fire Brigade likewise names the complete unwinding of reel cables as an important fire-safety rule [1].

Typische FehlerTypical mistakes

Kabeltrommel bei hoher Last komplett abrollen. Keine Trommel unter Staub, Teppich, Karton oder Werkstücken verdecken.

Fan heaters, compressors, vacuum cleaners, saws or several devices on one reel are problematic. Continuous operation close to the load limit is particularly critical. CPSC rates missing safety features on extension cords as a risk of shock or fire [2]. ESFI warns against overload, daisy-chaining, damage and permanent use of extension cords [4]. Unroll a cable reel completely under high load. Never cover a reel with dust, carpet, cardboard or workpieces.

FazitConclusion

A cable reel is practical but no substitute for a planned power supply. In workshops the better solution is almost always: more suitable sockets, fewer makeshifts, correct fusing and clear load distribution.
