Slicing: was zwischen Datei und Druck passiertSlicing: what happens between file and print
A printer does not understand a design file. It understands movements: where the nozzle goes, how fast, how much material it lays down on the way. The translator between the two is the slicer — and the decisions made there determine strength, surface, print time and therefore price at least as much as the file itself. This article explains the most important ones so you know what you can influence in an enquiry and what we take care of.
Was der Slicer tutWhat the slicer does
The slicer cuts the model into horizontal layers, plans the paths for each layer — outer wall, inner walls, infill, top and bottom surfaces — and writes machine code from them. One model becomes entirely different parts depending on the settings: thin-walled and light, solid and load-bearing, smooth and slow, or rough and fast. The file says what is built; the slicer says how.
Schichthöhe: Oberfläche gegen ZeitLayer height: surface versus time
Layer height is the most visible parameter. Typical FDM values are between 0.12 and 0.28 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle. Half the layer height means twice the number of layers and roughly twice the print time, but finer steps on sloped surfaces and rounder curves. For functional parts nobody looks at, 0.2 mm is a good standard; for visible parts 0.12 to 0.16 mm. Layer height changes strength only slightly — unlike what is often assumed.
Wände und Füllung: wo die Festigkeit herkommtWalls and infill: where strength comes from
The most common misconception: "100 % infill please, so it holds." In FDM, strength comes first from the walls. Three to four perimeters (roughly 1.2 to 1.6 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle) carry more than 60 % infill, because they form continuous paths. Infill supports top and bottom surfaces and distributes compressive loads; 15 to 25 % with a pattern such as gyroid or cubic is enough for most parts. More infill means more material, more time and more warping — not more safety. Solid infill is the exception for parts that will be milled, drilled or loaded in compression.
Ausrichtung: die Entscheidung, die alles überlagertOrientation: the decision that overrides everything
An FDM part is significantly weaker in the layer direction than across it — the bond between two layers carries, depending on material, only a fraction of what a continuous path carries. That is why the position on the build plate decides load capacity: a hook whose layers run across the pulling direction breaks at the layer; the same hook printed lying down holds. Orientation also determines which surfaces come out smooth (bottom and top), where supports are needed and how much the part warps. If you tell us the load direction, we orient the part accordingly — the most valuable piece of information an enquiry can contain.
Stützen: notwendig, aber nie kostenlosSupports: necessary, but never free
Overhangs beyond roughly 45° and bridges over a few centimetres need support material. Supports cost material and time, leave a visibly rougher surface at the contact area and have to be removed. Good design avoids them — chamfers instead of overhangs, splitting into two halves, orientation with the largest face down. Where they are unavoidable, we place them so the visible side stays free and tell you in advance where marks are to be expected.
Haftung, Temperatur, GeschwindigkeitAdhesion, temperature, speed
These three groups are a matter of material and machine, not of the client. A brim keeps warp-prone parts on the plate, cooling decides bridges and overhangs, temperature decides layer bonding and surface. We run stored profiles per material, tuned to our machines. On request we document the parameters per batch — for repeat orders where the second lot has to match the first.
SLA: dieselben Fragen, andere AntwortenSLA: the same questions, different answers
In resin printing there is no infill — the part is solid or deliberately hollowed, then with drain holes so no resin stays trapped. Layer heights are 0.025 to 0.1 mm; the surface is correspondingly fine. Supports are almost always needed because the part is built hanging or tilted, and they leave small marks that are finished afterwards. Orientation here determines less the strength — resin parts are nearly isotropic — than support marks, suction forces and warping of large flat areas.
Was wir übernehmen — und was wir nicht annehmenWhat we take care of — and what we do not accept
You provide the geometry (STEP, STL or 3MF) and, if possible, the purpose and load direction. We do the slicing: orientation, walls, infill, supports and profile are part of the manufacturing service and are stated in the order confirmation. We do not accept finished machine code (G-code) — it is tied to a specific machine, nozzle and material batch, and we could vouch for neither quality nor safety. If you want your own slicer settings, send them as a specification in the 3MF or as a list; we check them and tell you what we adopt.
